DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Directs
general medical care and treatment of physically ill patients at the County
Home and Infirmary and acts as medical consultant to the medical services
program of the Department of Social Services. Under direction, an employee in
this class is responsible for the program of medical services for the patients
and inmates at a County institution for the aged. In addition, the employee
participates in the medical program of the Department of Social Services by
reviewing requests for and cost of treatment provided by private physicians to
clients. Supervision is exercised over medical, nursing, technical and clerical
personnel. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative
superior who reviews, through conferences, the adequacy of the medical program
at the institution and at the Department of Social Services, and for adherence
to departmental and State rules and regulations concerning medical
authorizations. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
medical and nursing services at a County institution to provide efficient and
adequate medical coverage for all patients and inmates;
Makes recommendations on
methods and procedures to improve medical care;
Establishes and
implements approved policies;
Examines patients and
diagnoses causes of illness or injury, prescribes or administers treatment and
issues instructions on required nursing care;
Consults with other
physicians and with relatives of patients regarding treatment and care;
Makes referrals to
specialists as indicated by the condition of patients;
Reviews requests for
authorizations of treatment submitted by private physicians of welfare clients;
Reviews, consults and
advises on individual cases with Medical Social Workers and Caseworkers.

CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine; thorough knowledge of
medical facilities and resources available in the community; thorough knowledge
of geriatrics and institutional health problems; skill in diagnosing and
treating illnesses; ability to plan and supervise a medical program for
patients and inmates of the County institution for the aged; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, County
officials, and other physicians; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Possession
of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; five (5) years
of practice as a physician.
