DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general direction of the Director of the Division of Patient Care Services or his designee, the Clinic Medical Director oversees the medical operations of a County Clinic and is responsible for the supervision of the medical care provided through the services of the County's Clinic.  The incumbent is responsible both for providing direct services to patients utilizing the Clinic and for maintaining appropriate clinical standards for the physicians employed within the Clinic.  The incumbent is responsible for assuring that medical records are audited and reflect acceptable standards of care.  Supervision is exercised over professional and paraprofessional staff assigned to the Clinic.  Performance is subject to review by the Director of Patient Care Services.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Directs and supervises medical practices and procedures for the operation of the Clinic; 

          Maintains appropriate medical standards in the practice of all services provided by the Clinic; 

          Implements medical policies and recommends changes in the method of delivering care; 

          Assists in the periodic chart audit process of the Division of Patient Care Services in other ambulatory care Clinics; 

          Maintains and supervises quality assurance programs;  

          Supervises the performance of physicians assigned to the Clinic; 

          Provides general supervision and administrative direction for all personnel assigned to the Clinic and delegates administrative responsibility to the Clinic administrator; 

          Diagnoses and treats patients within his area of competency; 

          Conducts chart audits to determine appropriateness of tests ordered, findings, and disposition of patient treatment. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and standards of practice of general medicine; thorough knowledge of the operation and policies of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services; thorough knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of ambulatory care medicine; ability to plan and supervise the work of medical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.  Board certified in a specialty of medicine.
