DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for performing the routine functions of a mental health clinic, and for assisting the professional staff of the clinic by performing a variety of sub-professional duties.  Duties include interviewing applicants to obtain identifying data, contacting various community agencies and public groups, and assisting with arranging in-service trainings and presentations to the community.  Clerical duties are performed with a minimum of direct supervision and are reviewed only for adherence to departmental policy.  Assignments are received from a technical supervisor and are reviewed through reports of work completed.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Addresses community agencies and public groups on available community mental health clinic services; makes reports to the clinic staff of findings of the community's attitude toward knowledge of clinic services;

            Assists in the scheduling and arranging of a variety of community organization functions, including programming workshops, seminars and presentations relating to the field of mental health;

            Screens all incoming applications for clinic service to obtain identifying data;

            Assists in the maintenance of waiting lists and activity lists; schedules appointments for intake interviews, psychiatric examination, psychological testing, staff conference, collateral and other interviews;

            May assist with gathering data and materials for resource directories for mental health servcies.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; good knowledge of office practices, procedures and appliances; good knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision; some knowledge of the principles and methods of public speaking; ability to maintain complex records and to prepare written and oral reports; ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, and interested persons, and to obtain and verify information needed through investigation and interview; ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of a small clerical staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

Either:

a)      Completion of thirty (30) credit hours from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university; or

 

b)      Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of general office experience.
