FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class has responsibility for the supervision
of the psychiatric social work services in a mental hygiene outpatient
program. The incumbent performs
supervisory and professional psychiatric casework. Work involves responsibility
for supervising the work of the psychiatric social work staff, as well as other
program staff, the planning and programming of the unit and the direct
performance of psychiatric intake, treatment and casework. The incumbent may be responsible for an outpatient
program including the preparation of activity and statistical reports. Work is reviewed by administrative and
professional supervisors through review of case records, program activity
reports and through staff conferences.
Supervision is exercised over a small staff of psychiatric social
workers and clerical personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises psychiatric case work and
general administrative procedures of a mental hygiene program, schedules
appointments; reviews pending and active cases; reviews mail and replies or
files; assists in the preparation of clinic monthly and statistical reports;
reviews case activities; analyzes case loads;
Performs intake and case work;
interviews collateral persons and families of patients; dictates case reports;
Participates in case conferences
with psychiatrists, psychologists and other professional persons interested in
establishing diagnostic and prognostic impressions and plans for treatment or
referral of mentally ill and emotionally disturbed children and adults;
Participates in conferences with
professional and lay organizations and persons to promote mental hygiene
services; speaks before community groups concerning community mental hygiene
needs, facilities and aims.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, methods, procedures, techniques and practices of
psychiatric social work; thorough knowledge of the functioning of the
psychiatric outpatient programs; thorough knowledge of the social aspects of
mental illness, mental retardation, developmental disabilities, chemical
dependency and of modern methods of treatment; thorough knowledge of community
resources and how to use them effectively; ability to develop and maintain
cooperative relationships with patients, their families, professional
colleagues and the general public; ability to plan and direct the psychiatric
social work services in a mental hygiene program; ability to supervise a
psychiatric social work staff in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to keep records and prepare technical and statistical
reports; ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive social case work
records, and to analyze such information and to reach sound decisions; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Two (2) years of experience as a
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), at least one (1) year of which must
have been paid supervisory experience in a psychiatric setting.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as a Psychiatric Social Worker or Psychiatric Social
Worker-Alcoholism.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the time of appointment and
during employment in this title, candidates must possess a Certification as a
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) by the New York State Department of
Education.
At the time of appointment, and
during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid
license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
