CORRECTIONS CLASSIFICATION AND DIAGNOSTIC SPECIALIST 2514
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for assisting in
the implementation of a correctional classification system to evaluate inmates
upon admission and, based upon required review, implementing the approved
recommendation. Work includes the
training and supervision of correctional and civilian personnel with regard to
interpretation of classification instruments and interviewing techniques. Work is performed under administrative
supervision. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs
psychological evaluations of the jail population for the purpose of making
decisions regarding inmate management, contact visits, potential violent
behavior and potential suicide risks;
Evaluates the social
needs of the jail population for the purpose of determining potential social
problems both during the person's incarceration and following release;
Collects background
information which would be relevant to proper management and treatment of
inmate;
Evaluates the population
educationally and vocationally for the purpose of designing rehabilitation
programs suited to needs of the population as well as to capabilities of the
institution;
Assists in training
correctional personnel in the administration and interpretation of
classification instruments;
Assists in coordinating
data collection efforts with other criminal justice agencies which are
concerned with the jail population;
Assists in designing a
monitoring and evaluation system which would be used to test the effectiveness
of the classification system;
Assists in developing
proposals for rehabilitation programs based on needs assessment from the
classification system;
Assists in supervision of
uniformed and civilian personnel assigned to classification or treatment
positions.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of correctional classification principles and practices; good
knowledge of counseling and interviewing techniques; good knowledge of
personality development and factors which contribute to mental, emotional and
social maladjustment and deficiencies; good knowledge of educational
disabilities and methods of remedial instruction; good knowledge of research
techniques; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with others; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and
in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of
the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open Competitive
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or a related field, and three (3) years of
experience in correctional classification.
