DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for learning the practice of clinical psychology through an integrated team approach to psychological clinical services that includes the psychological examination, diagnosis and treatment of emotionally disturbed children and adults.  The incumbent's training is provided by qualified supervisors who assign progressively more responsible work according to the trainee's level of professional development.  Supervision may be exercised over support personnel.  Work is performed under the close supervision of a Supervising Psychologist and is reviewed through conferences and frequent observations of clinical activities. After a minimum of one (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Psychologist Trainee, an appointee who has obtained a Psychologist’s license issued by the NYS Department of Education attains permanent competitive status as a Clinical Psychologist without further examination. Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the administration of common psychological tests given to children and adults; records, analyzes and interprets test results;

          Learns and participates in the psychological treatment of clinic patients;

          Assists in the preparation of case reports and the maintenance of clinic records;

          Assists in conducting research studies undertaken by the clinic's staff;

          Participates in the functioning of staff conferences concerned with diagnosis, treatment planning and the administration of clinic services.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of psychological tests and measurements; good knowledge of the fundamentals of personality development and the factors contributing to mental, emotional and social instability; working knowledge of the sources of information and current literature in the field of clinical psychology; ability to work effectively with professional associates; ability to adapt oneself to varying clinical situations and to exercise initiative, tact and good judgment in dealing with clinic patients; ability to analyze and interpret written and statistical material dealing with psychological testing and treatment; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, and to effectively present professional reports and recommendations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN-COMPETITIVE

          A doctoral degree in Psychology from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university or forty-five (45) graduate degree credits in Psychology and matriculation in a doctoral degree program in Psychology in a New York State or regionally accredited college or university.

         

NOTE: The trainee period may not exceed a one-time maximum of three (3) years of consecutive service.
