DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class administers and interprets standardized tests and participates in diagnostic conferences and group therapy sessions in a mental health clinic or an employee assistance bureau servicing clients from multiple law enforcement and emergency services agencies. The work involves the application of a variety of psychological methods and techniques for the analysis of personality and behavior problems. The incumbent confers with associates in developing diagnoses and recommendations for treatment, guidance, placement and counseling.  Testing and interviewing are conducted with a considerable amount of independence. Any recommendations and conclusions may be subject to thorough review by professional peers through conferences and consultations.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Administers, scores and interprets standard psychometric and projective

tests to patients in clinics;

            Participates in group and individual therapy programs;

            Writes reports of findings and recommendations;

            Participates in conferences with professional colleagues concerned with diagnosis and treatment of patients, and policies and procedures of clinic operations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of modern psychological tests and measurements; thorough knowledge of personality development and of the factors which contribute to mental, emotional and social maladjustments and deficiencies; good knowledge of educational disabilities and methods of remedial instruction; good knowledge of social case work; ability to exercise sound judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a Psychologist's license, issued by the New York State Department of Education, at the time of examination.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Appointees must maintain a current license throughout their employment in this title.
