DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general direction, an employee in this class performs
professional psychiatric services in a community mental health clinic, jail
behavioral unit, and/or methadone clinic. The primary emphasis of the work is on
offering constructive therapeutic treatment to patients in collaboration with
staff. Work includes psychiatric and substance use disorder diagnosis and treatment
of patients, participation in training programs, and liaising with the
community regarding services. The
incumbent participates in all aspects of clinical services and documentation
permitted under the scope of practice, and exercises independent initiative and
judgment in the implementation of assigned tasks. Work is reviewed by an administrative
supervisor through periodic conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Conducts
psychiatric examinations of patients;
Conducts
individual medication management therapy for patients; may conduct group psychotherapy
and/or play therapy;
Participates,
as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, in conferences concerned with
diagnosis and treatment of patients;
Prepares
patient summaries/reports upon the request of the patient, or to comply
with regulatory requirements or legal writs; distributes said patient summaries
to the appropriate parties as permitted by law;
Consults
with community health providers and family members (as appropriate) regarding
the treatment of patients;
Participates
in community mental health education initiatives;
Develops
and engages in Department approved research projects;
Collaborates
with Nurse Practitioners and other staff regarding patient care;
Completes
necessary documentation, either in electronic or written format, in an accurate,
complete, and timely manner;
Participates in the Quality Improvement
activities of the Behavioral Health Units.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principal practices and
techniques of psychiatry as it relates to the administration of a mental health
center program; comprehensive knowledge of the functions of the mental health
agencies in the community; comprehensive knowledge of personality development
and of the factors which contribute to mental, emotional and social problems;
comprehensive knowledge of the work, functions and philosophy of all allied
disciplines involved in the care of patients within the division’s mental
health and substance use disorder treatment programs; comprehensive knowledge
of the current sources of information, literature and recent developments in the
psychiatric field; ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary staff for
optimum diagnosis and treatment of patients; ability to establish and maintain
cooperative relationships with patients, their families, professional
colleagues and public and private agencies; ability to prepare and analyze
complex reports and to reach sound decisions on the basis of such information;
ability to exercise sound judgment in appraising situations and making
decisions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
