SUPERVISOR FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN 2555
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class serves as intermediate level administrator in organizing and implementing a town sponsored program designed to further the development of exceptional children. Work is reviewed by conferences and observation of programs in progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Trains
volunteers to assist those who supervise recreational classes and special
activities;
Assists with planning and
scheduling staff assignments;
Serves when needed as
class supervisor and special activities leader;
Assists psychologists in
maintaining liaison with parents;
Maintains inventory of
supplies at adequate level and issues equipment as needed;
Is responsible for
supervision of bus arrivals and departures and recording staff attendance.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles and practices of special education and/or
therapeutic recreation; good knowledge of the social aspects of mental
deficiency and physical handicaps and of methods used to best develop persons
afflicted with varying handicaps; ability to develop and maintain good
relationships with therapeutic recreation program participants, their parents,
and program colleagues; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
degree and Certification as a Teacher by the New York State Department of
Education; or,
b) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
degree in Recreation.
