DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class administers a therapeutic recreation program for individuals with exceptional needs. The incumbent plans for and manages a Town-sponsored program for furthering the development of participants through therapeutic recreation. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs
all aspects of a Town-sponsored therapeutic recreation program;
Develops comprehensive
program plans for recreation therapy;
Establishes criteria for
the evaluation of programs and activities;
Participates in budgetary
planning and management.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and practices of Special Education and/or
therapeutic recreation; thorough knowledge of the social aspects of mental
deficiency and physical handicaps and of methods used to develop persons
afflicted with varying handicaps; good knowledge of administrative principles,
practices and procedures; good knowledge of the public relations and
fund-raising methods; ability to supervise subordinates effectively to attain
optimum performance and high morale; ability to commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, or a related degree, or Physical
Education, or Special Education, and three (3) years of experience working with
mentally and/or physically handicapped individuals in an educational or
recreational program.
NOTE:
Additional relevant education from a New York State or regionally
accredited college or university will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis.
