DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class assists in planning and managing a town-sponsored
program for furthering the development of exceptional children and adults
through therapeutic recreation. Work is
reviewed by the Program Director through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists
in directing all aspects of a town-sponsored therapeutic recreation program;
Assists in developing
comprehensive program plans for recreation therapy;
Assists in the evaluation
of programs and activities;
May be responsible for
aspects of budgetary planning and management.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and practices of special education and/or
therapeutic recreation; good knowledge of the social aspects of mental deficiency
and physical handicaps and of methods used to best develop persons afflicted
with varying handicaps; knowledge of administrative principles, practices and
procedures; knowledge of public relations and fund raising methods; ability to
supervise employees effectively to attain optimum performance and high morale;
ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Special Education or
Psychology and two (2) years of experience working with mentally and/or
physically handicapped children and/or adults in an educational or recreational
program.
NOTE:
Additional relevant education may be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year of permanent competitive status as a Program Supervisor For
Exceptional Children or Program Supervisor For Therapeutic Recreation.
