DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs paraprofessional work assisting nurses and other medical and technical personnel in clinical settings. Responsibility is included for the physical set up of clinical facilities, assisting medical personnel in non-professional routine duties and assisting clinic patients.  Work is performed to make it possible for medical personnel to devote more time to their professional duties.  Performance is supervised and reviewed periodically by the professional supervisor or supervisors to which the incumbent is assigned.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Assists medical personnel in the performance of paraprofessional duties in clinics; routes patients to examining rooms and assists them in dressing; holds children during examinations and treatment; weighs and measures patients; tests urine specimens; takes patients' temperatures and blood pressures; makes entries on patients' records;

               Assists in the physical set up of clinics; sets up examining rooms and tables, sees that each room is properly equipped; cleans up room after each patient; cleans and sterilizes instruments;

               Acts as clinic receptionist; greets patients and assists them in filling out forms; obtains personal and medical history information from patients and enters it on their charts; answers phones and makes clinic appointments; pulls and files patients' charts; prepares statistical reports of clinic attendance.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of clinic practices and procedures; ability to deal effectively with patients and their families in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to learn and perform the non-professional routines of clinic operations; ability to establish good working relationships with co-workers and patients; ability to obtain and verify information through interview; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
