DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF
THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
assists medical and nursing personnel in Family Planning clinical operations
and instructs patients in different methods of birth control. This title
differs from that of Public Health Aide in that incumbents receive specialized
training in Family Planning practices, which enables them to instruct patients
in contraceptive methods and devices.
Work is reviewed by Health Clinic supervisors and Family Planning
Program administrators. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Conducts
classes for patients; explains and demonstrates all methods of birth control;
After
examination, counsels patients on the method they have chosen;
Issues
supplies to patients based on program policy;
Prepares
doctor's desk and table for examinations and sees that all necessary supplies
and equipment are available;
Assists
the patients in undressing and positions them on the examination table;
Explains
various procedures and tests to patients in order to put patient at ease;
Enters
patients' names and numbers on appropriate records and reports;
Cleans the
room and sterilizes equipment after each patient;
Prepares
laboratory specimens as directed;
Weighs
patients, does vital signs and performs other medical procedures as directed;
Acts as
clinic receptionist and interviews patients; schedules follow-up appointments
for patients; contacts patients as required;
Performs
clerical duties as required; assists in the preparation of unit statistics.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the effectiveness and use of
contraceptive methods; working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of male
and female reproduction; working knowledge of public health clinic practices
and procedures; ability to work with patients and present individual and group
demonstrations and instructions on contraceptive methods and devices; ability
to obtain and verify information through interviews; ability to follow oral and
written instructions; tact, courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
plus one (1) year of experience in a public contact position within a health
related field.
NOTE: Relevant education beyond high school may be
substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor
vehicle in New York State.
