FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this
class performs para-professional work, or assists medical providers in
conducting medical examinations of patients in health centers or related health
programs. Work includes performing various preliminary medical screenings tests
and clerical duties. The incumbent's
performance is supervised and subject to review by professional supervisors.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Interviews clients to obtain medical
history and records information on charts;
Takes blood pressure and pulse,
tests urine specimens, draws blood samples and checks height, weight and vision
to prepare client for complete physical examination by medical providers;
Conducts electrocardiograph, hearing
and pulmonary function examinations;
Sets up examining rooms and tables;
sterilizes and cleans equipment;
Makes appointments, maintains
records and prepares correspondence and reports;
May administer written psychological
examinations to employees in specialized employment.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge
of medical office policies and procedures; working knowledge of medical
terminology, medical instruments and equipment and their applicability and
uses; skill in the use of sphygmomanometer, electrocardiograph, audiometer,
spirometer and vision-testing equipment; ability to safely draw intravenous
blood; ability to deal effectively with clients in a tactful and courteous
manner; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to follow oral
and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of
the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year
of experience in a position which involved assisting with medical treatment or
in the examination of patients, and included the performance of intravenous
blood drawing.
NOTE: Either satisfactory completion of a medical assistant
program from a State licensed school; or, a school or program accredited by an
accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or, a
college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may
be substituted for the one (1) year of required experience.
