DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
performs specialized dental treatment as part of a comprehensive dental
program. The incumbent performs technical work as specified in the dental
practice act under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs
specialized dental treatment as part of a comprehensive dental program;
Provides
dental health education in clinics and other health department programs;
Recommends
techniques in the care of gingiva and teeth;
Takes
oral radiographs;
Performs
topical applications of fluoride;
Coordinates
and maintains dental records of patients receiving treatment;
May
assist dentist in mixing filling compounds, sterilizing instruments and
administering prescribed medications.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of
dental hygiene; ability to work well with patients; ability to keep clear and
accurate records of the progress of patients; ability to express oneself clearly
and concisely, both orally and in writing; skill in the use of dental hygienic
instruments; manual dexterity; attentiveness to detail; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation from an accredited school of dental hygiene,
and possession of a license to practice in New York State.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At time of appointment and during employment in this
title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor
vehicle in New York State.
