DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class practices athletic training for participants in a public school athletic program for the purpose of preventing or managing athletic injuries.  The work is supervised by a licensed physician and the school district athletic director.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Establishes and implements a program for the purpose of minimizing injuries which includes conditioning programs, judicious equipment selection, athletic activity site safety checks and determination of physical fitness for partici­pation in intended activities;

            Provides first-aid, CPR, assesses extent of injury, manages wounds and provides transportation;

            Provides athletic participants with tapes, elastic bandages, braces, splints, pads and modified equipment;

            Tests injured athlete to evaluate injury, including tests for joint stabil­ity, muscle strength, neurological malfunction, etc.;

            Applies appropriate physical therapy for rehabilitation of an athletic injury;

            Educates athletic participants to encourage formulation of sound health habits and preventive care practices.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and techniques of health education; good knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency treatment procedures; skill in the application of varied modalities employed in physical therapy; ability to perform basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to record and interpret test results accurately; ability to maintain accurate and complete records of each athletic partici­pant's physical status; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a certified athletic trainer.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must maintain a valid license issued by the State of New York to practice as a certified athletic trainer throughout employment in this title.
