DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs professional health education services for the Department of Health Services.  The incumbent develops health education programming in a variety of settings:  the community, schools, health care facilities and in-service professional training.  The incumbent writes and distributes literature, and responds to health education-related inquiries from the public.  Work is reviewed by a Senior Public Health Educator through conferences and the attainment of desired objectives.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Studies community health needs and resources, and assembles technical information; selects, prepares and distributes posters, pamphlets and leaflets;

            Develops outlines and study materials for adult study groups and in-service training programs;

            Administers special health surveys; participates in evaluating projects for their continued development and improvement;

            Participates in conferences and meetings;

            May consult with community leaders to obtain their support and participation in community health development programs;

            Assists local groups in setting up organized means of assembling information and improving Public Health services;

            Plans and organizes the work of volunteers offering special skills;

            Makes educational presentations to schools and community groups on health topics.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and techniques of community health education, including curriculum development, methods of patient education and public information techniques; good knowledge of current literature and sources of information dealing with community health education; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with community agencies; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to address community groups effectively; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Science, Health Promotion, Community Health, or Health Communications; or,

            (b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness, or Nutrition, and one (1) year of experience in health education.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to satisfactorily complete 15 hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department within one year of appointment. 

 

At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees are required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
