DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs public health education work at a supervisory level involving the direction and supervision of a number of Senior Public Health Educators and Public Health Educators in professional health education services. The incumbent formulates and promotes a number of County-wide health education programs, including long-range projects, and integrates these programs into the overall goals of the department. The incumbent assigns work; and must approve all services and programs. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans and supervises public health education programs;

            Develops public health education programs including those for major ongoing health problems;

            Acts as a spokesperson to promote programs and advance public knowledge and interest; reviews all materials distributed to the public regarding public health education;

            Works with County Executive's office to promote acceptance and secure support for long-range programs and goals;

            Seeks grants for department to support programs;

            Plans and implements media campaigns designed to promote health.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the theories and practices of public health education, including public information techniques, methods of patient education, and curriculum development; thorough knowledge of current literature and sources of information dealing with public health education; thorough knowledge of the policies and programs of the Health Services Department; thorough knowledge of the health needs and resources of communities served by public health programs; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and writing; ability to supervise and evaluate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Master's Degree in Public Health or Health Education, and three (3) years of experience as a public health educator in a supervisory capacity; or,

            b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Science, Health Promotion, Community Health or Health Communications, and five (5) years of experience as a public health educator, four (4) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Senior Public Health Educator.

           

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
