FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class plans and implements Emergency Medical
Technician training programs for volunteer ambulance or police department
personnel. The incumbent is expected to
exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of
assigned duties, and may be required to develop and conduct specialized training
courses. Supervision is received from
the Emergency Medical Training Officer, or the commanding officer of the Police
Academy, through conferences and consultations.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Plans and organizes the Emergency
Medical Technician certification and recertification training programs for
volunteer ambulance personnel, police department personnel or other law
enforcement personnel in Suffolk County;
Instructs the Certified First
Responder course for seasonal police officers;
Determines the need for, and initiates, Emergency Medical Technician training courses, and monitors the courses for adherence to established curriculum;
Develops instructional materials and
training aids for use in the training program;
Develops training programs for
instructors and seminars for ambulance personnel, when needed;
May recruit instructors for the
program and monitor their performance;
Selects equipment and supplies to be
purchased for the program, and ensures that the equipment receives proper
maintenance;
Instructs personnel on the proper
use and operation of equipment and training aids;
Acts as liaison with members of the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council Subcommittee on Education and Training, and with New York State Health Department officials;
Supplies information regarding the
availability of Emergency Medical Technician training courses;
Maintains a file of volunteer
ambulance and police department personnel, showing their organization and
completed level of training.
Attends required training seminars
and conferences to maintain current certifications.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of current literature, sources of information and recent developments
in the field of emergency medical treatment; thorough knowledge of the
equipment and materials used in emergency medical training programs; good
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of emergency treatment
procedures; skill in the use of emergency medical training equipment and audio-
visual equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with co-workers and volunteers; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare and
maintain accurate records; good judgment; initiative; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New York State
or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree and one
(1) year of full-time experience (or its part-time equivalent) in planning
and/or conducting training courses for ambulance or police personnel; or,
(b) Graduation from a standard
senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five
(5) years of full-time experience (or its part-time equivalent) in planning
and/or conducting training courses for ambulance or police personnel; or,
(c) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
Candidates must
possess an Emergency Medical Technician’s Certificate issued by the State of
New York at the time of appointment and maintain said certification throughout
employment in this title.
At the time of
appointment and throughout employment in this title candidates shall
also be required to possess either:
(a) Current certification as a New
York State Certified Instructor Coordinator by New York State Department of
Health; or
(b) Current certification as a New
York State Certified Lab Instructor by New York State Department of Health; or
(c) Minimum prerequisite
requirements for Certification as a New York State Lab Instructor as defined by
the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
Candidates may be required to
obtain certification as an Instructor Coordinator issued by the New York State
Department of Health within two (2) years of appointment in this title.
Candidates
may be required to obtain certification as a Mental Health Instructor
issued by the Ney York State Department of Health within six (6) months of
appointment in this title.
Candidates may be required to
obtain certification as a CPR Instructor issued by the American Red Cross, the
American Heart Association or the National Safety Council within nine (9)
months of appointment in this title.
To
be employed by the Suffolk County Police Department:
Candidates
may be required to obtain certification as a Police Instructor issued by
New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services within (6) months of
appointment in this title.
All
certifications required must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
