DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates the implementation of programs for the Suffolk County Defibrillator Placement Task Force.  The incumbent is responsible for promoting, coordinating and facilitating the implementation of Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) programs, serving as a resource of information regarding PAD, and providing for educational programs relevant to heart disease and prevention strategies, as well as PAD.   Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through reports, conferences and attainment of desired results.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Promotes, coordinates and facilitates the implementation of Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) programs;

Compiles and provides a list of names of emergency health care providers, who are available to collaborate with facilities that wish to implement PAD programs;

Serves as the Suffolk County Defibrillator Task Force’s liaison with municipalities and the general public;

Collects data for quality improvement review of all PAD uses or indications for use;

            Provides educational programs in PAD, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and risk reduction strategies for cardiac disease.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

            Thorough knowledge of principles of Public Access Defibrillation (PAD); thorough knowledge of New York State laws and New York State Health Department policies and guidelines pertaining to PAD; good knowledge of recent literature regarding PAD, as well as pathophysiology and treatment of sudden cardiac death, cardiac dysrhythmia and cardiovascular disease; ability to gather information and prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of government agencies and civic organizations, health personnel, and the general public; ability to address groups effectively; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

(a)   Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree, two (2) years of experience in the delivery of emergency medical services and certification by the New York State Department of Health as a Certified Instructor Coordinator or Certified Lab Instructor; or,

(b)   Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, six (6) years of experience in the delivery of emergency medical services and certification by the New York State Department of Health as a Certified Instructor Coordinator or Certified Lab Instructor.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            1. At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.

            2. At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees must possess current certification as a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Instructor. 

            3. At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees must either (a) possess certification by New York State as an Emergency Medical Technician-CC or Paramedic, or  (b) be licensed by the State of New York as a Registered Nurse or Physician’s Assistant.
