DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
Under general direction, an employee in this class is
responsible for the supervision and training of Emergency Medical Technicians
who provide first-aid treatment or emergency medical care either through an
ambulance or non-ambulance service at the site of occurrence. The incumbent assigns work schedules,
ensures that Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services protocols and New York State
Department of Health Article 30 rules are being adhered to. Does related work as required.
Supervises the work of Emergency
Medical Technicians who provide emergency medical care to those in need;
Trains
and evaluates the performance of Emergency Medical Technicians in the proper
conduct of their duties;
Assigns
work schedules and determines staffing requirements to provide adequate
coverage of the jurisdiction;
Maintains attendance, vacation, sick
and other personnel records for staff Emergency Medical Technicians;
May be responsible for maintaining
compliance with the districts Quality Assurance Program;
May be responsible for maintaining
the proper inventory of ALS (Advanced Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life
Support) supplies;
May
fill in as an Emergency Medical Technician on any tour not properly covered.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of emergency treatment
procedures appropriate for a New York State Certified Emergency Medical
Technician; thorough knowledge of recent developments in the field of emergency
medical treatment; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate
personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
remain calm when eliciting information from persons who may be in a highly
emotional state; ability to use a personal computer; ability to evaluate the
extent of illness or injury; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Possession
of an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate issued by the New York State
Department of Health and three (3) years of experience in providing emergency
medical care.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as an Emergency Medical Technician,
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care,
or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.
1.
Candidates must maintain a current Emergency Medical
Technician Certificate throughout employment in this title.
2.
Candidates may be required to possess the appropriate New
York State driver’s license, and maintain such license throughout employment in
this position.
3.
Candidates must be free of any speech or hearing defects
which would impair functioning in this position.
