DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class plans, designs and teaches courses on emergency medical care to ambulance personnel.  The incumbent schedules courses, assembles materials and arranges for consultants to supple­ment instruction as necessary.  The work requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative, and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through observation, conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Formulates lesson plans, following established curricula; 

          Schedules and coordinates the services of consultant teachers; 

          Monitors attendance, requisitions equipment and materials; writes reports on class performance;

          Maintains inventory of training equipment and arranges for repair or replacement of materials and equipment for a wide variety of courses; 

          Evaluates new training devices, films and materials; makes recommenda­tions regarding their purchase. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency medical treatment; thorough knowledge of materials and equipment needed in the instruction of emergency medical treatment procedures; good knowledge of recent developments and trends in the field of emergency medical care; skill in the application of emergency medical treatment; ability to plan and develop course curricula and lesson plans; ability to present material to students in an organized and effective manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students and consultant teachers; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain accurate records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of paid or volunteer experience as an emergency medical technician, ambulance attendant or ambulance driver in an ambulance organization, or as an instructor of emergency medical treatment procedures. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

          1. Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this title. 

          2. Certification by New York State as an Emergency Medical Technician at the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid certification throughout their employment in this title.
