DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class provides initial first-aid
treatment or emergency medical care either through an ambulance or a
non-ambulance service at the site of an occurrence. These positions differ in levels of care they
are certified to render as outlined by New York State Department of Health and
Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services Guidelines. Direction is received from administrative
supervisors or higher level professional personnel who review work through
Quality Improvement Programs and online communications with Medical Control.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Responds to calls when
dispatched, gains access to the patient and assesses the extent of their
injuries or illness;
Provides
life support services to stabilize persons in life threatening situations
resulting from trauma and other medical emergencies;
Communicates with
dispatcher requesting additional assistance or services as necessary;
Uses prescribed
techniques and equipment to provide patient care and provide additional
emergency care following established protocols;
Seeks medical direction
from Medical Control Physician and carries out orders as appropriate;
Assesses and monitors
vital signs and general appearance of patient for change;
Makes determination
regarding patient status and priority for emergency care using established
criteria;
Assists with lifting,
carrying and properly loading patient into the ambulance;
Determines appropriate
medical facility to which patient will be transported and transports patient
while providing ongoing medical care as necessary enroute;
Reports nature of injury
or illness to receiving medical facility;
Reports verbally and in writing observations of the patient’s emergency and care provided to emergency department staff and assists as required;
Complies with regulations
in handling deceased;
Replaces supplies,
properly disposes of medical waste, cleans contaminated equipment according to
established guidelines and maintains ambulance in operable condition;
Receives and transmits
communications from the public and agencies requesting emergency services;
May be asked to perform
routine maintenance and custodial work on station and equipment when not
performing the primary responsibility of the class;
May assist in driving
emergency services vehicles.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques
of emergency treatment procedures; good knowledge of equipment and supplies
used in administering emergency medical treatment; good knowledge of recent developments
in the field of emergency medical treatment; ability to operate a two-way radio
system; ability to use a personal computer; ability to act calmly and
effectively in emergency situations; ability to evaluate the extent of illness
of injury; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of one of the following
certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health: Emergency
Medical Technician-Basic Certificate; Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate
Certificate; Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care Certificate; or
Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate
EMERGENCY MEDICAL
TECHNICIAN-CRITICAL CARE
Possession of one of the
following certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health: Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care;
or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN-PARAMEDIC
Possession of an Emergency Medical
Technician-Paramedic Certificate issued by the New York State Department of
Health.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Candidates must
maintain the appropriate Emergency Medical Technician Certificate throughout
employment in this position.

speech or hearing defects that would impair functioning in this position.
4. Candidates for Emergency Medical
Technician-Critical Care and Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic must have
completed the Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee’s (REMAC)
Advanced Life Support credentialing process at the time of appointment and must
complete all protocol and policy updates throughout employment in the position.
5. In jurisdictions where required,
the incumbent must obtain certification of completion of
the appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) entry-level
course(s), including Incident Command System (ICS) training, within 26 weeks of
appointment.
