DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists in formulating and conducting a comprehensive nutrition education program.  Duties include writing press releases, and working with school districts, and civil groups to promote nutrition awareness.  Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through reports, conferences and occasional observation.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in planning and conducting nutrition education training seminars for teachers and community agencies throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties and New York City;

            Conducts workshops for parents of students to increase their nutrition awareness;

            Assists in researching, evaluating and developing materials to be used in the workshops;

            Provides assistance to school lunch programs in promoting nutritious meals to student populations;

            Prepares press releases, brochures and pamphlets to educate the general public about the role of nutrition education and training programs in schools;

            Provides input for the development of grant applications for future nutrition education programs;

            Researches and maintains files on child nutrition legislation and funding sources for nutrition education;

            Compiles and maintains a listing of community resources in the area of nutrition;

            Prepares reports and drafts correspondence as needed.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of nutrition education; thorough knowledge of training methods; good knowledge of the principles and practices of community nutrition education including curriculum development; good knowledge of available community resources and facilities; ability to prepare informative programs of nutrition education for groups of all age levels; ability to use effectively all available communication media; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN-COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition and two (2) years of experience in nutrition education.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
