DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for promoting and coordinating nutrition services throughout the County by planning, developing and directing the Nutrition Services program of the Department of Health Services.  The incumbent integrates departmental programs with nutrition activities and objectives of governmental and voluntary agencies at the local, state and federal levels.  The employee exercises a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative in evaluating community needs and in developing and conducting a consultation and education program for professional personnel and the public.  Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through reports, conferences and occasional observation, and is exercised over professional and auxiliary personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Provides consultation and technical assistance to community agencies, health professionals and the general public;

            Plans and conducts an in-service education program on nutrition for the Department's professional staff;

            Formulates policies pertaining to nutrition services;

            Develops and prepares educational articles and materials;

            Evaluates informational material from other public and private sources and promotes the use of this material among the organizations and individuals served by the nutrition program;

            Conducts studies and surveys to determine the need for nutrition services within the County;

            Attends professional meetings and conferences to keep informed of current developments in the nutrition field;

            Supervises professional and clerical staff;

            Directs fieldwork for professional personnel assigned to the Department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public health nutrition; thorough knowledge of administrative and organizational methods; thorough knowledge of current developments, literature and sources of information in the nutrition field; good knowledge of the organization and goals of the public health program; good knowledge of training methods; ability to apply nutrition principles to the needs and requirements of the community; ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of professional and clerical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various organizations and residents of the community; ability to conduct studies and surveys and to prepare educational articles and reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition, and six (6) years of experience in community or public health nutrition, two (2) years of which must have been in an administrative capacity.

 

NOTE:  Additional education in nutrition may be substituted for non-administrative experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years; an internship approved by the American Dietetic Association may be substituted for one (1) year of non-administrative experience.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Nutritionist I.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            At the time of appointment, the candidate must be a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietician Nutritionist, credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.  This registration must be maintained throughout the term of employment.

            At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees are required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

            Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the assignment.
