FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class does outreach work in developing community contacts to introduce the services of a drug and alcohol counseling program to potential clients. The employee implements a community- oriented program designed to provide counseling services for youthful drug and alcohol abusers, establishes and maintains contacts with schools, civic associations and government agencies, and makes contacts with the target population in formal and informal settings. The incumbent exercises initiative and independent judgment in carrying out the work, which is reviewed through reports and conferences. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Establishes and maintains an outreach network with
potential clients, and with civic, educational, and governmental organizations,
institutions and agencies;
Conducts education and information
sessions with clients;
May interview, screen, and advise
clients with drug and alcohol related problems;
Refers clients to other agencies in
accordance with individual needs;
Assists clients in utilizing services
to which they have been referred;
Staffs storefront "drop in
center" facilities;
Supervises and/or accompanies client
groups in activities organized as alternatives to drug and alcohol abuse.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the social, educational and familial
problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse by youth; good knowledge of the
resources available for the treatment and care of youthful drug and alcohol
abusers; working knowledge of the techniques of group counseling and community
organization; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with clients and community agencies; ability to adapt to varying field
situations and to exercise initiative, tact and good judgment in dealing with
clients in a drug and alcohol counseling program; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by New York State with a Bachelor's Degree, and
one (1) year of experience in an organized program dealing with drug and/or
alcohol abuse, as a counselor, educator or in a similar capacity.
