DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates and supervises an outreach program to make contact with those who need assistance in overcoming the problem of drug and/or alcohol abuse. The work involves exploration of innovative approaches to locate potential clients and bring about their participation in a therapeutic program. This class differs from that of Drug and Alcohol Community Coordinator I in that it involves determining the means of establishing contact and supervising the implementation of the program. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Enlists
the cooperation of schools, civic associations, government agencies and other
groups in establishing contact with drug and/or alcohol abusers;
Supervises and
participates in visits to target areas to meet potential clients and encourage
them to accept counseling;
Supervises activities
organized as alternatives to drug and alcohol abuse in and outside of center
setting;
Conducts education and
information sessions with Drug and Alcohol Community Coordinators I to develop
communication and rapport with potential clients;
Assists clients in
utilizing services to which they have been referred.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the social, educational and familial problems associated with drug
and alcohol abuse by youth; thorough knowledge of the resources available for
the treatment and care of youthful drug and alcohol abusers; good knowledge of
the techniques of group counseling and community organization; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and
community agencies; ability to adapt to varying field situations and to
exercise initiative, tact and good judgment in dealing with clients or
potential clients in a drug and alcohol counseling program; ability to
supervise staff members in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's degree, and three (3) years of experience in an organized program
dealing with drug and/or alcohol abuse, as a counselor, educator or in a
similar capacity.
NOTE:
Additional education beyond the Bachelor's degree in Social Work or
Counseling may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a
maximum of two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year of permanent competitive status as a Drug and Alcohol Community
Coordinator I.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession
of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment;
appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this
title.
