SENIOR DRUG ABUSE EDUCATOR 2712
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
establishes and coordinates drug education programs. The employee may be responsible for directing
a staff of Drug Abuse Educators who are engaged in preventive drug and alcohol
education. Primary responsibility may include field supervision, publication and
organization. The incumbent is expected
to exercise considerable independent initiative and judgment in directing a
program of drug and alcohol education.
Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews
work through conferences, reports and upon completion for desired results. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Coordinates the work of Drug Abuse Educators and
supervises their participation in conferences, training programs and preventive
drug education programs; personally participates in speaking engagements and
panel presentations;
Develops a drug education curriculum
and formulates drug policies for use in schools;
Works with professional educators to
establish programs through the schools; prepares programs to educate parents
and other persons who are not reached through the efforts of the schools;
Evaluates educational proposals
submitted by school districts or educational associations; reviews drug
programs involving education and prevention of drug and alcohol abuse that have
been approved by the New York State commissions and agencies and the County
Health Services Department to insure conformance with pre-established policies;
Coordinates programs established by
schools, B.O.C.E.S., Alcoholics Anonymous, Municipal Narcotic Guidance Councils
and various community based volunteer groups;
Serves as consultant to professional
and non-professional groups who are interested in initiating programs of
preventive drug education.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of
community mental health education, especially as it applies to the preparation
and presentation of drug control information; thorough knowledge of the
principles and practices of drug and alcohol addiction control and of all
federal, state and local programs and laws related to the prevention of drug
addiction; good knowledge of community resources and facilities and how to use
them effectively; good knowledge of modern developments, current literature and
sources of information available in the field of drug education; ability to
prepare informative programs of drug education for groups of all age levels;
ability to use effectively all available communication media; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials,
municipal drug councils and other drug and alcohol control groups; ability to
plan, organize and supervise the work of Drug Abuse Educators in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and three
(3) years of experience as a counselor, educator, or in a similar capacity in
an organized program dealing with drug and/or alcohol abuse, one (1) year of
which must have been in the development of educational programs for drug
control.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years permanent status as a
Drug Abuse Educator or Drug Abuse Educator (Spanish Speaking).
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment,
and during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
