DRUG ABUSE EDUCATOR (SPANISH SPEAKING) 2713
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class formulates and conducts a comprehensive
drug education program on a municipal or County-wide level. Duties include
writing press releases, preparing audio-visual presentations and educational
literature and working with municipal and civic agencies to promote programs
aimed at reducing drug and alcohol abuse. This class is distinguished by the
fact that the incumbent conducts programs and prepares literature for the
Spanish speaking community. The incumbent works with considerable independence
in the performance of duties, and the work is reviewed by means of reports and
conferences with supervisors. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in the planning and
execution of training seminars for teachers;
Conducts bilingual drug education
programs in schools;
Schedules speaking engagements with
municipal agencies and civic organizations;
Accumulates statistical information
on drug and alcohol abuse in specific locations throughout the County;
Prepares bilingual drug education
material for publication and dissemination;
Develops and selects appropriate
audio-visual materials, study guides, books, pamphlets and brochures concerning
drug dependence.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the social and clinical problems and dangers associated with drug
and alcohol abuse; thorough knowledge of current trends and developments in the
field of drug and alcohol abuse and education; good knowledge of federal, state
and local laws pertaining to drug and alcohol abuse; good knowledge of
available public programs dealing with problems related to drug and alcohol
use; ability to read, write and converse fluently in Spanish; ability to write
clearly and to address groups effectively; ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with co-workers and with community and
governmental agencies; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a
Bachelor's Degree, and one (1) year of experience as a counselor, educator or
in a similar capacity in an organized program dealing with drug and/or alcohol
abuse; or,
b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a
Bachelor’s Degree, and twenty-four (24) additional graduate credits toward a
Master’s Degree in Social Work, Education or Counseling; or,
c) Registration as a
credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) by the New York
State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the
time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees will be
required to possess a valid license to operate a Motor Vehicle in New York State.
There will be a qualifying Spanish
language examination.
