DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class formulates and/or conducts a comprehensive alcoholism education program on a municipal or county- wide level.  Duties include writing press releases, preparing audio-visual presentations and educational literature and working with municipal and civic agencies to promote programs aimed at reducing alcohol abuse.  The incumbent works with considerable independence in the performance of duties, and the work is reviewed by means of reports and conferences with supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the planning and execution of training seminars and presenta­tions for teachers and counselors;

          Conducts alcohol education programs in schools;

          Schedules speaking engagements and lectures with municipal agencies and civic organizations;

          Accumulates statistical information on alcohol abuse in specific locations throughout the municipality;

          Prepares alcohol education material for publication and dissemination;

          Develops and selects appropriate audio-visual materials, study guides, books, pamphlets and brochures concerning alcohol dependence.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the social and clinical problems and dangers associ­ated with alcohol abuse; thorough knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of alcohol abuse and education; good knowledge of Federal, State and local laws pertaining to alcohol abuse; good knowledge of available public programs dealing with problems related to alcohol use; ability to write clearly and to address groups effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and with community and governmental agencies; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and one (1) year of experience in an organized program dealing with alcohol abuse, as a counselor, educator or in a similar capacity.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment in this title.
