DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates Suffolk County's highway safety programs, including the Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated (STOP-DWI) and the Suffolk County Seat Belt Program. The incumbent develops, administers, coordinates and evaluates a full program of services aimed at reducing the number of Driving While Intoxicated incidents in Suffolk County. Other responsibilities include the tracking of statistics, and continuous contact with the public and private community agencies and services that are involved in the Driving While Intoxicated problem. Responsibility is also included for overall administration of the Seat Belt Program. Supervision may be exercised over a small staff of technical and clerical personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops and administers
an intensive public education/media campaign to highlight the Driving While
Intoxicated problem in Suffolk County, and the need for increased seat belt
usage; utilizes community organizations to build public awareness of the
Driving While Intoxicated problem;
Interprets, analyzes and
proposes legislation related to the Driving While Intoxicated problem;
Assembles, analyzes and
interprets data on alcohol related arrests, convictions and accidents for
educational, research and informational purposes.
Cooperates with and assists
local officials within the County in the development and evaluation of alcohol
related traffic safety programs;
Administers the Suffolk
County Seat Belt Program;
Coordinates the efforts of
public and private agencies engaged in traffic safety, law enforcement,
adjudication, rehabilitation and prevention education programs;
Recommends funding for
traffic safety proposals received from County,
Town, Village, and non-governmental agencies.

CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the policies and programs of the Suffolk County
criminal justice system with particular emphasis on highway safety; good
knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations; good knowledge
of the techniques and methods of data collection and analysis; ability to
analyze and interpret legislation and to translate legislation into a concise
and meaningful program; ability to maintain an effective working relationship
with all local governments, community services and agencies; ability to use the
communications media effectively; ability to analyze and evaluate complex data;
ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a subordinate staff in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express
oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree
and five (5) years of experience in human services or public relations, two (2)
years of which is at an administrative level; or,
(b) Graduation from high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and nine (9) years of
experience in human services or public relations, four (4) years of which is at
an administrative level; or,
(c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and
(b).
