DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class is responsible for planning, directing and monitoring
programs of public education and professional training for the Department of
Health Services. The employee utilizes
considerable initiative in the selection and implementation of programs and
strategies, presented through diverse media, aimed at increasing public awareness
of public and/or mental health issues including, but not limited to, smoking,
alcohol and substance abuse, encephalitis, environmental protection,
environmental quality, health safety, AIDS/HIV awareness, and at enhancing the
performance of professionals involved in public and/or mental health programs
within Suffolk County. Supervision is exercised over senior professional staff
involved in prevention, education, training and a wide range of media
services. Assignments are received from
an administrative supervisor and work is reviewed through conferences. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs
prevention, education and training programs relevant to public and/or mental
health issues;
Directs video services;
Directs the development
and publication of a department newsletter;
Represents the department
on various committees, councils and task forces;
Serves as the
department’s liaison to the media;
Oversees the selection,
monitoring and evaluation of prevention, education, training and video staff;
May draft correspondence
for the Commissioner of Health Services.
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and techniques of public and mental health
education; thorough knowledge of educational and prevention programs and
services offered by the department; good knowledge of treatment programs and
services offered by the department; ability to plan, organize and supervise the
work of a senior professional staff involved in prevention, education, training
and video services in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
ability to promote and maintain effective departmental and public relations;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree and eight (8) years of professional experience in public
and/or mental health prevention, education and training programs, at least four
(4) years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
