DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists in coordinat­ing a driving while intoxicated prevention program and related highway safety programs.  The incumbent provides administrative and technical support services to these programs.  Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and oral and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Coordinates internal workflow in the office relating to DWI and highway safety programs;

          Prepares correspondence in response to inquiries concerning highway safety programs;

          Researches and evaluates highway safety equipment and procedures;

          Represents an administrative supervisor at monthly Traffic Safety Board meetings, conferences, and inter-departmental and public meetings of highway safety agencies and organizations;

          Conducts defensive driving classes for County employees;

          Assists in planning and implementing driver training and highway safety seminars for presenta­tion to youth groups and employees operating county vehicles and equipment;

          Conducts training classes on managing traffic around worksites and the protection of employees at worksites;

          Evaluates tasks performed by highway personnel and makes recommendations regarding proper safety procedures and guidelines to be followed;

          Inspects worksites to ensure compliance with highway safety guidelines;

          Compiles information and recommends program components for the preparation of the annual DWI plan;

          Compiles, reviews and maintains a variety of informational resources and files related to the DWI program and other programs related to highway safety.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of the highway safety policies and programs of the Suffolk County criminal justice system; working knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations; working knowledge of the techniques and methods of data collection and analysis; ability to maintain an effective working relationship with all local governments, community services and agencies; ability to supervise employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree; or,

          b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in public administration or in program related work in highway safety; or,

          c) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience as described in b); or,

          d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a), b) and c).

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
