DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision an employee in this class is responsible for the management of the County's Highway Safety Programs.  Supervision is exercised over a technical and clerical support staff.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Coordinates the day to day operation of Highway Safety Programs;

         Monitors and evaluates the County Highway Safety Program's effectiveness;

         Reports program efforts to groups with a specific interest in developing educational programs in promoting awareness programs;

         Maintains contact with the Suffolk County Traffic Safety Board and other resources;

         Develops plans to efficiently and effectively use available community resources;

         Represents the County Executive in dealing with County departments, agencies and community groups involved with highway safety;

         Prepares draft news releases concerning significant happenings in highway safety;

         Serves as liaison with New York State for the Stop DWI and Highway Safety Programs.

Good knowledge of highway safety practices and programs; knowledge of community organizations and their functions; knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations; knowledge of the techniques and methods of data collection ad analysis; ability to maintain an effective working relationship with local governments, community services and agencies; ability to supervise employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to obtain and verify information; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to maintain records; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Either:

a)    Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in highway safety, public administration or management analysis; or,

 

b)    Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience as described in a); or,

 

         c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
