DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs specialized clerical work in maintaining records and reports of cases reported to the Medical Examiner's Office. Detailed instructions and close supervision are received at the beginning of work and at new assignments, but regular routine assignments may be performed more independently and some initiative and judgment is utilized as experience is gained. Employees may make checks upon work of other employees, but do not exercise direct supervision over others. Work is subject to close supervision and is reviewed upon completion. Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Receives and records incoming calls reported to the Medical Examiner's Office by police, hospitals, doctors; receives and records incoming bodies; aids in placing bodies in morgue box; checks body tags;

            Assists the Medical Examiner during autopsies by checking records and filling out forms;

            Maintains records of cases reported to the Medical Examiner;

            Operates the telephone switchboard;

            Maintains clean working conditions within the morgue office.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of general office procedures, equipment and clerical techniques; ability to learn assigned tasks and to adhere to prescribed departmental routines; ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
