DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direction, an employee in this class is responsible for assigning Morgue Assistants to autopsies and other work in the morgue, and for preparing the necessary reports and records. Responsibility is also included for assisting at autopsies, during which the incumbent is under the supervision of a pathologist. Work is reviewed by the Medical Examiner, who reviews records and reports for conformance with department procedures. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assigns
subordinates to cases to obtain maximum utilization of facilities and staff;
Prepares body for autopsy,
selects instruments, sets up scale and specimen containers;
Eviscerates bodies,
removes organs and gives them to the Pathologist for examination and analysis;
Cleans and restores
organs to body; sutures and cleans the body for release;
Incinerates brain, liver
and other organs after they have been analyzed; cleans incinerator
periodically;
Maintains records of
bodies autopsied, identification records and personal effects, and insures
release of proper body to mortician;
Orders supplies, maintains
inventory and insures that scrub suits and other laundered apparel are
available.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some
knowledge of anatomy; ability and willingness to work on cadavers; ability to
plan and supervise the activities of subordinates; ability to maintain accurate
records and purchase supplies as required; physical condition commensurate with
demands of position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma and 1 (one) year of experience as a Morgue Assistant.
