DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the transporting of injured and incapacitated persons from incident sites within their jurisdiction. Responsible, careful driving habits must be exercised to ensure the safety of ambulance passengers and members of the general public, pedestrians and other motorists. The incumbent is responsible for evaluating the vehicle to determine whether it meets basic road-worthiness and passenger safety standards. Detailed instruction and supervision are given at the beginning of employment and on new assignments, but regular assignments are performed more independently as experience and skill are gained; Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Transports injured and incapacitated persons from scenes of motor vehicle accidents, fires, and other accident premises as required, including homes and hospitals within their jurisdiction;

            Shall provide non-medical aide to EMT and other emergency support personnel e.g. manning a stretcher, sweeping and clearing accident sites, obtaining basic, non-controlled medical supplies from ambulance;

            May be asked to perform routine maintenance and custodial work on station and equipment when not performing the primary responsibility of the class.

           

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the geography and traffic regulations in the relevant jurisdiction; ability to operate a vehicle safely and efficiently; ability to deal sympathetically and courteously with emotionally distraught relatives and friends of injured; ability to follow medical personnel’s instructions to avoid further injury; ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs on vehicles; ability to exercise sound judgment when driving to and from an incident scene; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a current, valid and appropriate New York State driver's license, and maintain it throughout employment in this title.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates may be required by the Appointing Authority to complete a driver training course which will evaluate the incumbent’s ability to drive under both normal and emergency conditions.
