DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the
transporting of bodies in cases resulting in death by accident, suicide,
homicide, or any other suspicious causes. Care must be exercised in properly
identifying bodies, collecting all tissue and remains of interest to the
pathologist, recording personal effects if any and protecting the body and
evidence during transit. Detailed instructions are received from a supervisor
and maintenance duties are inspected upon completion. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Transports
cadavers from scenes of violent or unexplained deaths including homes and
hospitals with the County to the County Morgue;
Collects brain tissue,
limbs, bones and other remains that may have been separated from the body;
Identifies and tags
bodies if possible, collects and lists valuables, clothing and personal
property found near the body;
Assists in the
preparation of bodies for purposes of identification
Performs routine
maintenance of vehicle, checks gasoline, oil, battery, general running
condition and presence of body bags and stretchers and other necessary
equipment;
Washes departmental
vehicles;
Picks up and delivers
specimens from hospitals;
Picks up and delivers
paperwork pertaining to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the geography of the County and traffic regulations; ability to
operate a vehicle safely and efficiently; ability to deal sympathetically and
courteously with emotionally distraught relatives and friends of deceased;
ability to handle cadavers, some of which may be decomposed, mutilated or
malodorous; ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs on vehicles;
ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates
must possess a current, valid and appropriate New York State driver's license,
and maintain it throughout employment in this title.
