DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Performs initial examinations of bodies at scene of death after death pronouncement.  Upon receipt of notification of death, visits the scene of death and examines the undisturbed body to investigate circumstances surrounding death, condition of the body, and to question witnesses.  After completing the examination the findings are submitted to the Medical Examiner's Office for further examination, autopsy, identification or claim, or the incumbent may turn the case back to the attending physician or hospital for return to the family.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Responds to death scenes to investigate undisturbed bodies before they are removed;

            Collects objects and specimens and any evidence pertinent to the investigation of the cause of death, such as blood, suicide notes, clothing and drugs, for submission to the Medical Examiner's Office;

            Collects money and other personal effects found near or on body and submit them to the Medical Examiner's Office and/or Police Department having jurisdiction;

            Interrogates witnesses if any and aids in determining the identity of the body;

            May take a photograph of the death scene and request the confiscation of any evidence which will aid the investigation of the case;

            Issues written report on surroundings of death and authorizes removal of the body.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, literature and current developments in the field of Forensic Medicine and Surgery; thorough knowledge of laws and regulations applying to deaths; ability to tactfully obtain accurate information through interviews interrogation, and observation and to work with the general public and other governmental agencies interested in the investigation; ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
