DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists the Chief Medical Examiner by performing varied complex and confidential duties. The incumbent coordinates the administrative duties and functions of the office and is expected to use a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative. Responsibility is included for supervision of the medical records section and clerical staff. Performance is reviewed by the Chief Medical Examiner through conferences. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists the Chief Medical Examiner in the designing and planning of special programs and projects;

            Serves as office manager and coordinates all administrative functions of the department;

            Schedules Medical Examiner staff for attendance at Grand Jury, trials, hearings and before trial conferences;

            Coordinates release of information, statistics and Medical Examiner records to courts, insurance companies, news media and other interested parties;

            Responds with discretion to telephone inquiries from other agencies;

            Prepares confidential and technical correspondence.

Thorough knowledge of methods and techniques of office management and operation; good knowledge of principles and procedures of public administration; good knowledge of modern office equipment, practices and procedures; good knowledge of medical terminology; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and representatives of other agencies; good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in an office that provides forensic scientific analytic services, one (1) year of which must have included experience involving responsibility for office management, supervision and/or public relations.
