DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Performs specialized pathological studies of the central nervous system.  In cases coming under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office an employee in this class performs examinations of central nervous system tissues submitted by the Deputy Medical Examiner (Pathologist), and interprets findings as they may relate to the elucidation of the cause of death.  Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Sections pertinent portions of the brain and spinal cord for histologic and histochemical preparations;

            Describes gross appearance of neurological specimens;

            Examines microscopic slides of sections to establish disease and/or traumatic processes;

            Interprets findings as they may relate to the cause of death;

            Advises pathologists, medical examiners, and other interested persons about neuropathological lesions encountered during post mortem examinations;

            Consults with pathologist, toxicologists and other physicians correlating neuropathological findings with clinical findings;

            Reduces findings to written neuropathological reports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, standard practices, methods, techniques, literature and current developments in the field of neuropathology; thorough knowledge of principles, practices, literature and current development in the field of general medicine, surgery, pathology and neurology; ability to exercise a degree of independent judgment involving complex problems arising from the examination of neuropathological specimens; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and; two years of training in general pathology, and; three years of training in neuropathology, or;

            Satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience.

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility for a certificate in neuropathology issued by the American Board of Pathology.
