DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs administrative and technical duties in the Forensic Investigation section of the Medical Examiner's Office.  Work involves the performance of independent and confidential investigations of deaths that result from criminal, suspicious or undetermined causes.  The incumbent supervises Medical Forensic Investigators and develops and implements policies and procedures for the Forensic Investigation section.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Works in conjunction with the Chief Medical Examiner to develop and implement the sections operational policy and procedures;

            Provides in-service training, education and orientation for employees;

            Develops work schedules, distributes assignments and reviews the work of employees;

            Develops and maintains efficient record keeping and evidence management systems and administrative procedures;

            Acts as a liaison with the Chief Medical Examiner and with other sections under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's office;

            Provides administrative and technical support for special assignments as directed by the Chief Medical Examiner;

            Conducts investigations of homicides, suicides, sudden or accidental deaths;

            Prepares reports and records regarding the findings of investigations.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern medical/legal investigative methods and techniques; comprehensive knowledge of what constitutes and how to safeguard evidence; thorough knowledge of modern laboratory methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, hospital personnel, law enforcement agencies, other governmental agencies and the general public; ability to plan and direct the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to deal sympathetically and objectively with people under stress; good judgment, tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and possession of a Physicians Assistant Registration Certificate issued by New York State, and two (2) years of experience as a Physician's Assistant certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants or otherwise certified experience; or,

            (b) Possession of a Physician's Assistant Registration Certificate issued by New York State, and four (4) years of experience as a Physician's Assistant certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants or otherwise certified experience.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Medical Forensic Investigator.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            Possession of a Physician's Assistant Registration Certificate issued by New York State at time of appointment and throughout employment in this position.

            Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing Committee, and maintain this credential throughout employment in the assignment.

            At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
