FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class serves as a Town’s liaison with Federal, State and County agencies
concerning the Town’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The incumbent coordinates the broad range of compliance issues through the Supervisor’s
Office. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative
supervisor, and is reviewed through conferences and the submission of required
reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Ensures Town government compliance
with Federal and State laws affecting people with disabilities;
Serves as the Town’s liaison with
Federal, State and County agencies regarding the Town’s ADA compliance issues including
building accessibility, handicapped parking
and reasonable accommodations;
Advises Town departments on
alternate formats and/or technologies that enable individuals with disabilities
to communicate, participate in functions, and perform tasks;
Acts as an ombudsman for the
disabled community and represents their interests by investigating and
addressing complaints;
May provide training on compliance
issues to Town employees;
Works with Town officials to ensure
that new facilities or alterations to existing facilities meet legal
requirements.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws affecting
people with disabilities; good knowledge of public assistance programs offered
to the disabled; good knowledge of the problems faced by the disabled; ability
to communicate effectively with officials in the public and private sectors to
encourage their cooperation in bettering the conditions which are problems for
the disabled; ability to represent the disabled as an advocate in public and
private sectors; good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of one (1) year of an
accredited law school program (24 credits), and five (5) years of experience working
with the disabled.
