DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class works in the Office for People with Disabilities or a municipal
jurisdiction and assists in the administration of a variety of programs that
provide services and information to disabled residents. Work is performed under
the direct supervision of an administrative superior. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Answers hotline phone, referring
callers to the appropriate agency and/or disseminating helpful information;
maintains a log of such calls and follows up to see if problems have been
solved;
Assists with Handicapped ID card
program, sorting applications and producing the cards;
Assists in the development of
directories concerning information for people with disabilities;
May assist with the publication of a quarterly newsletter;
Provides information to individuals
or groups concerning services offered to the disabled;
Acts as liaison between handicapped
persons and municipal agencies seeking to reach those in need;
Attends meetings conducted for
training and information on the disabled.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge
of public assistance programs offered to the disabled; ability to understand
the problems faced by the disabled; ability to assist in evaluating and solving
problems; ability to communicate and deal effectively with the general public;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2)
years of experience in the delivery of health, social, educational,
recreational or community services for the disabled, or in the field of
counseling the disabled.
NOTE: Additional
education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State will be
substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
