DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

          An employee in this class monitors and reviews the work of a professional staff assisting individuals in crisis situations on either the family or personal level.  The incumbent provides services to a family or individual in a crisis situation.  Duties include family counseling, volunteer and staff training and public speaking.  Supervision is exercised over a professional staff and is received from administrative supervisors through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises a professional staff in the development of a plan for the management of a case, including long range goals, or helps to establish alternate solutions for the problem;

          Oversees the provision of supportive and emergency services to a family or individual;

          Provides orientation and training seminars for staff volunteers and family members;

          Coordinates a case review on the family or individual;

          Reviews and discusses periodic reports on those assisted by the program with staff.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of social work; thorough knowledge of counseling methods and techniques and their application to work problems; good knowledge of the services and resources provided through public and private social service agencies; ability to prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive reports about cases under the incumbent's responsibility; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, assign, and supervise work of professional personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Social Work and one (1) year of experience in social work in a public or private agency; or,

 

          (b) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years of experience in social work in a public or private agency; or,

 

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Case Manager or Case Manager (Spanish Speaking).
