FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class is responsible for assisting individuals in crisis situations on the
family or personal level. The incumbent counsels clients and refers them to
appropriate sources that can provide needed assistance. Duties require
proficiency in both Spanish and English languages. The incumbent is responsible
for case planning and management in a program that provides temporary and
emergency help for counseling and volunteer parent training. Supervision may be
exercised over a staff, and is reviewed from administrative supervisors through
conferences and written reports. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Meets with clients and makes
temporary housing arrangements when necessary;
Contacts family members and
ascertains the needs of the family;
Develops a plan and alternate
solutions for the management of the case, including the long-range goals of the
family;
Provides supportive and emergency
services to the client and/or family;
Prepares reports about those who are
assisted by the program;
Counsels the family members in order
to try to help them resolve future problems.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles,
practices and techniques of social work; thorough knowledge of counseling
methods and techniques and their application to work problems; good knowledge
of the services and resources provided through public and private social
service agencies; ability to analyze and evaluate case records and to reach
sound decisions; ability to prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive reports
about cases under the incumbent’s responsibility; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to read, write and
converse fluently in both the Spanish and English languages; ability to plan,
assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance
and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor’s Degree, and two (2) years of experience in social work in a public
or private agency.
NOTE: Additional education in social work may be
substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
There will be a
qualifying Spanish language examination.
Depending upon assignment,
candidates may be required at the time of appointment and during employment in
this title to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
