DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This is an administrative position responsible for the delivery of general and adult services within Suffolk County.  The work involves responsibility for the following functions: General Services, Adult Protective Services, and other related activities.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Community Services Administrator.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of a large group of professional, para-professional and clerical personnel providing general and adult services delivery;

          Interprets State regulations and directives; plans for and implements necessary program procedures;

          Administers the collection of operational statistical data necessary for measuring program efficiency and effectiveness; ensures that all State mandated reporting requirements are accomplished in an accurate and timely manner;

          Coordinates General and Adult Services delivery and staff activities with other divisional and departmental operations;

          Assists in the preparation of the division's annual budget and Title XX plan;

          Acts as a community liaison with professional and social organizations to inform them of the goals and objectives of the General and Adult Services Program.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, procedures and techniques of social casework; comprehensive knowledge of the Federal, State and local laws and regulations relating to the administration of Social Service programs; thorough knowledge of the functions of various divisions of the Social Services Department and their inter-relationships; thorough knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources of information in the field of social services; thorough knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision; ability to plan, direct and review the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to represent the Social Services Department and to interpret its programs and policies to outside groups and agencies; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and eight (8) years of experience in social casework, four (4) years of which must have been in providing services to adults, and four (4) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE:  Additional graduate education in Social Work may be substituted for non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Either:

(a) Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Director of Social Services; or,

 

(b) Four (4) years of permanent competitive status as a Casework Supervisor.
