DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs a variety
of routine duties to permit supervisors to more effectively direct their
efforts to administrative pursuits. The
incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment and initiative in the
performance of these tasks. The work
differs from that performed by a School Teacher Aide in that this position
involves a greater variety of assignments of a quasi-administrative nature
rather than limited classroom assistance.
Work is performed under the direction of a principal or other
administrator, and is reviewed periodically for compliance with school
regulations and policies. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Counts, marks, codes and
distributes textbooks at the beginning of the school year and takes inventory
at years end;
Requisitions, routes,
collects and returns BOCES audio visual equipment and materials;
Arranges assembly
programs, provides props and facilities, schedules activities;
Prepares correspondence
in response to inquiries regarding school operations and procedures;
Receives complaints and
refers them to the proper parties for resolution;
Attends conferences and
meetings as required and reports to the principal or other administrator;
May call substitutes,
prepare time sheets and distribute checks;
May assist in the
preparation of reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of office terminology and procedures; some knowledge of
the operational procedures and activities encountered in a school; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to deal
courteously and effectively with staff members and the general public; ability
to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
and either:
(a) Two (2) years of clerical experience; or
(b) Two (2) years of experience working with children in an educational or
recreational capacity; or,
(c) An equivalent
combination of the experience defined in (a) and (b).
NOTE:
Relevant education beyond high school from a New York State or
regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for experience
on a year-for -year basis.
