FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class manages
the operation of the BOCES Textbook Program which provides textbooks to several
thousand students in non-public schools. Responsibilities include developing
processes for purchasing and textbook flow, working with districts and parents
to address and resolve program issues, conducting periodic visits to several
distribution centers, and greeting and interacting with students and parents. Supervision
is exercised over textbook program staff and considerable use of independent
judgment and initiative is required. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Interviews,
hires, trains and supervises staff in the procedures and policies of the
Program;
Supervises
the organization of textbook applications so that purchase orders can be
initiated;
Meets
with students and parents to resolve problems, including lost books;
Works with school
districts to improve efficiency within the program, and develop processes for
purchasing and textbook flow;
Maintains
an inventory of textbooks in common usage;
Approves
orders for textbooks not in inventory;
Establishes
a schedule for distribution and collection of books; directs mailings to
parents;
Visits
distribution sites to troubleshoot problems;
Authorizes payment of invoices for textbooks ordered and received;
Assists in preparing program budget
and various reports, including those used to generate billing.

Thorough knowledge of the operation of a textbook
program; thorough knowledge of program policies and procedures; good knowledge
of textbook sources; good knowledge of the principles of maintaining computerized
records and inventory; good knowledge of the principles and procedures of
budget preparation; good organizational skills; ability to plan, assign and
supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to develop and
maintain effective training programs;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
ability to maintain effective relationships with students and parents; good
judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with an Associate's Degree, and two (2) years of
experience in textbook inventory control; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in textbook inventory control; or,
c) An
equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of
(a) and (b).
