DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing paraprofessional work in a public school health office under professional supervision. The incumbent relieves the Registered Nurse or School Nurse-Teacher of the more routine aspects of health office duties and also assists the nurse in receiving and taking care of the needs of students in the health office.  The incumbent at times must be prepared to work without direct supervision.  The work is reviewed through observation and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Maintains first-aid supplies, health related supplies and office supplies for health office;

          Keeps daily log of all students seen at the health office and enters the care given;

          Assists in the physical set-up of examination room;

          Records receipt of immunization proof on students' health records;

          Contacts parents when students are to be sent home because of illness;

          Provides first-aid treatment in absence of nurse;

          Organizes and distributes health education material;

          May weigh, measure and screen students for vision or hearing defects; 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of first-aid procedures and techniques; good knowledge of medical terminology applicable to clinic procedures; ability to work calmly and well under stress; ability to establish and maintain good rapport with students and staff members; ability to learn cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques; ability to perform standard office clerical procedures; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of basic Red Cross first-aid course or its equivalent.
